Disability Medical Condition: Ependymoblastoma

Ependymoblastoma is a malignant brain tumor that occurs in infants and young children. It is listed as a central nervous system embryonal tumor under the classification of primitive neuroectodermal tumors. The World Health Organization still sees the condition as a distinct nosologic entity. While it is very rare, it still ranks among the second most commonly diagnosed malignancy, behind leukemia. Symptoms of Ependymoblastroma include loss of balance and weakness of the body. The cause of Ependymoblastroma in children is currently unknown. The National Cancer Institute states that it is currently affecting less than 200,000 individuals in the United States. The five-year survival rate is from 0 percent to 30 percent according to the institute.

The disease is listed as one of the medical conditions in the Compassionate Allowances Program. The program expedites the application process so that individuals with severe medical conditions can apply for disability benefits quickly.

Under the Compassionate Allowances program, those suffering from certain medical conditions and impairments will have their application processed quickly through the “fast track” program which helps administrators rapidly identify and process medical conditions on the program’s list of medical impairments.
