Disability Medical Condition: Mixed Dementia

Mixed dementia occurs when an individual has Alzheimer’s disease and another dementia at the same time. The most common mixed dementia includes vascular dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association said that mixed dementia may occur more than researchers once thought as autopsies have shown that 45 percent of patients who had suffered from dementia had both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. There are no drugs or treatment to cure or help mixed dementia that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but doctors have been prescribing various medicaions to help the condition. With early detection, vascular dementia can be prevented. However, there is no prevention for Alzheimer’s.

The disease is listed as one of the medical conditions in the Compassionate Allowances Program. The program expedites the application process so that individuals with severe medical conditions can apply for disability benefits quickly.

Under the Compassionate Allowances program, those suffering from certain medical conditions and impairments will have their application processed quickly through the “fast track” program which helps administrators rapidly identify and process medical conditions on the program’s list of medical impairments.
