Apply For Social Security Disability Benefits

If you are recently disabled you should begin getting your information together and apply for benefits right away. It can take three to five months to process an application for disability benefits. To apply, you will need to complete an application for Social Security benefits and the Disability Report.

You can complete both the Application and Adult Disability and Work History Report online. You can also contact the Social Security Administration directly at 1-800-772-1213.

Do not delay completing your application if you are unable to gather all necessary documentation, the Social Security Administration can help you.

Once the Social Security Administration reaches a decision, they will send a letter outlining their decision. If your application is approved, the letter will disclose the amount of your benefits and when the payments will begin. If your application is denied, the letter will explain why and give you directions to appeal the decision if you disagree.
